Prospective Speakers
Thinking of joining us as a speaker?
What's involved?
Training
Speakers will participate in our training program over the course of several months. This typically involves:
One orientation session
Two training sessions where the talk will be developed
Two rehearsal sessions focussing on body language and presentation skills
Training will be conducted by professors from McGill University and Université de Montréal. See our panel of speaker trainers here!
Presenting
After training, speakers will present their talk to a public audience in Montreal. These events draw a wide audience of science enthusiasts ranging from no scientific to training to PhDs. Following the talks, we host an informal reception where speakers and attendees can mingle, audience members can ask questions, speakers can make connections, and we all enjoy refreshments!
What's in it for you?
Improve skills: Under the guidance of speaker trainers, you will hone your science communication and presentation skills. These are highly transferrable skills that will be an asset in many sectors following your graduate studies. It is not common in grad school to gain this type of experience, so we aim to fill this gap in ourtraining. You don't need to have any experience to join!
Evidence of your skills: Most talks earn you a line on your CV. NeuroLingo goes far beyond this by professionally filming your talk and publishing it on YouTube. Not only does this expand the reach of your work and make it easily shareable, but it can be used to showcase your communication abilities for future jobs and opportunities. Videos typically receive views in the 100s-1000s range.
Networking: There are many networking opportunities throughout the course of participating in NeuroLingo. First, you will meet regularly with professors and students in your field, allowing for networking within academia. At our events, we have previously had individuals in industry connect with speakers upon learning about their work. Additionally, there are often stakeholders of the research topics present - for example patients or family members of patients. Finally, published videos allow others to engage with your work, and we have previously had viewers reach out to us to connect them with the speakers with questions and opportunities.
Speaker Testimonials
"I found Neurolingo to be a very rewarding experience. I learned to talk in front of an audience, practice for a talk, and also overcome my stage fright. I also really appreciated the support and mentorship from the training sessions and from the Neurolingo team. I would definitely encourage other students to participate."
"A big thank you to you for all the help and time and dedication you've put into the project. When I signed up, my aim was to improve the way I do presentations and thanks to [NeuroLingo] I think it's a good step in the right direction! 😊"
